"Boats against the current, we beat on ceaselessly into the past." ― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby, a 1925 novel by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, is set in the Jazz Age on Long Island and depicts narrator Nick Carraway's interactions with mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and Gatsby's obsession to reunite with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan.
Fitzgerald's youthful romance with socialite Ginevra King and the riotous parties he attended on Long Island's North Shore in 1922 inspired the novel. After completing a rough draft in 1924 while living on the French Riviera, Fitzgerald submitted the work to editor Maxwell Perkins, who persuaded him to revise it over the following winter. Satisfied with the final text, Fitzgerald remained ambivalent about the book's title and considered several alternatives, ultimately desiring the title "Under the Red, White, and Blue." Painter Francis Cugat's cover design, which Fitzgerald incorporated into the novel, impressed the author.
The Great Gatsby continues to attract popular and scholarly attention. In 2013, director Baz Luhrmann adapted the novel to film, while contemporary scholars emphasize the work's treatment of social class, inherited wealth compared to those who are self-made, race, environmentalism, and its cynical attitude towards the American dream. Widely considered a literary masterpiece and a contender for the title of the Great American Novel, The Great Gatsby is a true classic that belongs on every bookshelf.
